Major engineering works to close Portsmouth Railway for a week

Rail passengers in the Portsmouth area should prepare for service disruptions as major engineering works will shut parts of the railway from Saturday 15 to Friday 21 February 2025.
Network Rail will be carrying out vital upgrades to improve reliability and passenger comfort.
What’s Happening?
- Track and Conductor Rail Replacement – At Portcreek Junction, engineers will lay 390m of new track and 450m of conductor rail, replacing two sets of points.
- Viaduct Upgrades – Landport Viaduct will receive long-lasting synthetic wheel timbers to support trains at Portsmouth & Southsea station.
- Bedhampton Level Crossing – New track and ballast will be installed, with a fresh coat of paint for the crossing.
- Tree Clearance – Between Fareham and Portchester, dead and dangerous trees will be removed to prevent disruption from falling leaves.
- Fratton Footbridge Renovation – Scaffolding will be installed for exterior refurbishment and painting.
How Will This Affect Your Journey?
- Saturday 15 – Tuesday 18 February: Rail replacement buses will run between Havant, Portsmouth Harbour, and Fareham. Southern passengers can use South Western Railway services between Fareham and Southampton Central.
- Saturday 15 – Friday 21 February: Rail replacement buses will operate between Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour.
Passengers are urged to check with Southern, South Western Railway, or Great Western Railway for detailed travel information.

Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex Route Director, emphasized the importance of the upgrades:
“These improvements will result in smoother, quieter, and more reliable journeys for passengers.”
Both Southern and South Western Railway officials advise travelers to plan ahead and allow extra time during the works.
